I Introduction
Icon Master is a Windows 3.0 utility program that allows for
the viewing and management of multiple Windows 3.0 icon
files. Icon Master will display as many icons as will fit
into the display window. From the display window, the user
may select any one of the icons that are shown and then
perform any of the icon management functions that are
described in this manual.
II Installation
A. Getting started
Icon Master is installed by simply copying the program
files that are listed below to a directory of your
choice. To start Icon Master, select File|Run from the
Program Manager's main menu and type "IM" and ENTER.

C. Setting program options
The program options that are described below may be set
or reset by selecting File|Options on Icon Master's main
menu. A dialog box containing the following options will
be displayed.
o Save changes on exit.
This option determines whether changes to program
options are to be saved at program termination.
Default: YES
o Prompt for icon delete.
This option determines whether the user is prompted
whenever an icon is deleted.
Default: NO
o Icon editor.
Name of your icon editor. If your editor is not
located in a directory that is included on the PATH
statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then the
complete path to your icon editor must be specified
here. Refer to Icon Managers section below for a
list of several icon managers that are currently
available.

D. Icon Master initialization file (IM.INI)
The operation of Icon Master is controlled by an
initialization file that is read during program startup.
This file, (IM.INI), must be located in the same
directory as the IM.EXE executable file. If the IM.INI
file is not present when Icon Master is started, it will
be created with a default set of options. The options
contained in this file are maintained automatically by
the Icon Master program and no action by the user is
required. If it is desired, the user may set any of the
program options directly by using any text editor to
edit the IM.INI file. The options in this file are in
the same format as those used by the Windows 3.0
initialization file (WIN.INI).
The available options are:
o Icon_Directory
Complete path for directory containing the icons to
be viewed.
Default: Directory where IM.EXE is located.
o File_Filter
File filter used by Icon Master when making a list
of icon files to be viewed.
Default: *.ICO
o Icon_Editor
Name of your icon editor. If your editor is not
located in a directory that is included on the PATH
statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then the
complete path to your icon editor must be specified
here. Refer to Icon Managers section below for a
list of several icon managers that are currently
available.
Default: SDKPAINT
o Save_Changes
This option determines whether changes to program

This option determines whether the user is prompted

E. Icon editors
In order to use Icon Master's Edit function, you must
specify the name of your icon editor program in Icon
Master's options setup dialog box. Here is a list of
several icon editors that are currently available.
o SDKPaint Supplied with the Microsoft Software
Development Kit.
o IconDraw IconDraw is a shareware product that is
available on many public bulletin
boards.
o IKE Available at no charge from PC MagNet.
(A service of PC Magazine).

F. License and registration information
Icon Master is a shareware product. You are free to make
copies of the distribution archive (IM21.EXE) and pass
it along to friends for their evaluation. If you make
use of this software package, you are expected to pay a
registration fee of $15.00 to:

Upon receipt of your registration fee, you will be given
a registration number which can be entered into Icon
Master via the registration process. When the
registration process has been completed, Icon Master
will no longer display the "Shareware Agreement" at
program startup. For your convenience and for future
reference, your registration number will be displayed in
Icon Master's About dialog box.
The registration process may be initiated by clicking
the Register button on the "ShareWare Agreement" dialog
box that is displayed at program startup or by selecting
File|Register on Icon Master's main menu.
Becoming a registered user entitles you to use this
software on a single user computer and to make as many
copies of this software as you wish for backup purposes.
Registered users are also entitled to technical support
and future versions of Icon Master at a discounted
price. Site licenses are also available.
Shareware distributors may not charge a fee for the Icon
Master program but may charge a small distribution fee.

III Operation
A. Selecting icon directory
Specify the directory where your icons are located by
selecting the File|Directory from Icon Master's main
menu. A dialog box containing an edit box with the
current icon directory path and a list box will be
displayed. The desired directory may be entered directly
into the edit box or selected by using the list box.
Click on the OK box when you have specified the correct
directory.
B. Selecting icons
Icons may be individually selected/deselected for
manipulation by positioning the cursor over the desired
icon and clicking the left mouse button. When an icon
has been selected, a "select box" will be drawn around
the desired icon and all of the menu items that are
described below will be enabled.
C. Editing icons
Select an icon using the procedure described above and
click over the Edit menu item. Icon Master will call
the icon editor that you specified in the program
options dialog box. The name of the icon file you
selected will be passed to your icon editor as a command
line argument.
NOTE:
Not all icon editors have command line support for the
name of the icon file to be edited. Refer to the
documentation of your icon editor for details.
D. Renaming icons
Select an icon using the procedure described above and
click over the Rename menu item. A dialog box showing
both the old and new name will be displayed. Enter the
new name and click over the OK button.
E. Deleting icons
Select an icon using the procedure described above and
click over the Delete menu item. The selected icon file
will then be deleted. If the "Prompt_For_Delete" option
is on, you will be prompted for an OK before deleting
the icon file.

F. Mouse-less systems
Icon Master has full keyboard support for all of the
functions that are normally performed by using a mouse.
Here is a list of keys that are supported and the
functions that are performed:
Up Arrow Move mouse pointer up one icon.
Down Arrow Move mouse pointer down one icon.
Left Arrow Move mouse pointer to the left one icon.
Right Arrow Move mouse pointer to the right one icon.
Page Down Display next page of icons.
Page Up Display previous page of icons.
Home Display first page of icons.
End Display last page of icons.
Enter Select/deselect icon under mouse pointer.
G. Attaching an icon to a program item
Perform the following procedure to attach an icon to a
program item under Windows 3.0.
1. Select File|New on the Program Managers main menu.
2. In the New Program Object dialog box that appears,
select the radio button for new program item and
click on the OK button.
3. In the Program Item Properties dialog box that
appears, type in a brief description of the new
program and the complete path and file name to the
program.
4. Click on the Change Icon... button.
5. In the Select Icon dialog box that appears, type in
the complete path and file name of the icon file
that you want to attach.
6. Click on the View Next button to show the icon that
you have chosen. Click on the OK button if it is
the icon that you want.
7. Click on the OK button back in the Program Item
Properties dialog box and the icon that you have
chosen will be displayed in the active program
group.
